If you had a free round-trip ticket to anywhere, where would you go?
If I could go anywhere in the world without worrying about paying for the tickets, I’d go to Ireland. My reasons are thus:
There isn’t big language barrier: I’d love to go to a country like Italy and try authentic pizza, or somewhere in Asia and try the night life in those nations. Problem is, I don’t speak the languages of those nations. As a dumb American, I have trouble learning languages, and what I do learn I tend to butcher cuz I mumble. Aside from Irish Gaelic, most of the people there speak English-enough for me to get by, at least!
The people seem friendly: again, being American there aren’t many places to go that haven’t been negatively impacted by my rotten government’s foreign policies. Ireland has been affected the least, so maybe I can make some comrades there. Which brings me to my third reason…
Rampant anti-colonialist sentiment: Ireland, having been a victim of the British Empire for centuries, has an adversarial relationship with nations like England, Israel and the United States. As someone who hates my country and what it is doing to the world at large, I may find myself among people who feel the same as me about the state of the world.
This is all my feelings on the nation, and reality will probably deal me a huge check for my butt to cash, but I still would like to visit Ireland someday.
Just not on St Patrick’s like every American who thinks they have an in due to a 1% genetic relation to being Irish or whatever.
Till next time.
